Elders & Deacons

Pastor Steve Marquedant – Elder

Pastor Steve came to Christ at the age of 11. He graduated from Pacific Coast Baptist Bible College in 1979 with a B.A. in theology as the Valedictorian of his class. He joined Sovereign Grace Baptist Church in Ontario, CA in 1978. He came on full-time staff in 1980 and was ordained as an Elder in 1982. In 1989 he became the primary preaching pastor, a role he has joyfully carried on since. He married his precious wife Becky in 1976. They have four children, and 11 grandchildren. Pastor Steve’s primary focus is the preaching ministry of the church, pastoral oversight, and the administration of the church’s day-to-day affairs. A few blog articles by Pastor Steve can be found on our page. Pastor Steve generally preaches morning and evening at SGBC and his sermons can be heard by clicking on the “sermons” link.

Mike Gabriel – Elder

After serving as a deacon for more than 15 years, in April of 2018 Pastor Mike was installed as an elder. Mike is from Arizona and came to California for college, earning a B.A. and M.B.A. from Azusa Pacific University. Shortly after college, he met his wife Linda, and they were married. While both grew up in a Christian home and made professions of faith at young ages, they did not come to learn about the Doctrines of Grace until after they were married. He and his wife, Linda, came with their family to SGBC in 1996. Their 3 children have grown up in the Reformed Faith and are now adults. Both Mike and Linda enjoy learning more about church history and seeing the Providence of God working in the affairs of men and nations.

Ken Gillespie - Elder

Ken is a native Angeleno who came to Christ at the age of 25 through the faithful witnessing of several fellow police officers. Ken served in small to major police and sheriff’s departments on both the west and east coast for thirty-five years advancing to the rank of Chief of Operations (Uniformed). When offered a Chief of Department position Ken experienced the undeniable call from the Lord to leave law enforcement and enter into the ministry on a full-time basis.

Ken has served in various capacities on a part-time basis within the Lord’s Church for the last twenty-five years. Ken’s specific calling is in preaching and teaching and he has a particular passion for equipping the Lord’s saints. He is overjoyed to devote himself full-time now to this vocation.

Ken is married to Karen, a lovely retired church administrative assistant, and they make their home in Rancho Cucamonga. They have five children, all grown, and eight grandchildren.

Ken graduated from Biola University with a Bachelor of Science (Highest Honors) in Organizational Leadership with a minor in Biblical Studies and from Knox Theological Seminary with a Master of Arts (Summa cum laude, named “Outstanding Student” for the Classics Department) in Theology, Classical Philosophy, and Classical Literature. Ken has also done graduate work in strategic leadership at Boston University, the Senior Management Institute for Police at Boston / Harvard University, and the California Law Enforcement Command College (elected “Class Speaker).

In his spare time Ken enjoys reading of all kinds, especially history, painting, and riding his bicycle and motorcycle, but not at the same time.
